Buying a Vehicle

Requirements

The following documents will be required to complete the application for title and vehicle registration:

  • The current title or documents from the dealer properly endorsed by the previous owner(s)
    • Signatures must be notarized if the title has a section for notarization
    • Do not purchase a vehicle from an individual without obtaining a properly assigned title
  • A current and accurate vehicle odometer reading (for vehicles less than 10 years old)
  • If the vehicle has an out-of-state title, a Verification of Vehicle Identification Number Form (DR 2395) completed by a licensed Colorado motor vehicle dealer or by the sheriff’s office or town police or by the County Clerk’s office
  • A  Bill of Sale for sales tax purposes, unless the purchase price is indicated on the title
  • Proof of insurance
  • If the vehicle has a lien to be recorded, an acceptable mortgage document (security agreement) must be provided
    • The document must be an original, carbon copy, or a certified copy and must contain the vehicle description (year, make, and VIN), lienholder’s name and address, lien amount, and the owner’s signature
  • Vehicles purchased from a Colorado dealer with liens to be filed are generally mailed to the County Clerk’s office
